Birthday treats

Yesterday I turned the dreaded 30! Luckily I had a lovely day so some of the sting was taken out of the scary age :) I had lots of lovely messages from you guys so thank you and I woke up to a balloon, cake and lots of cards.

I had a girly day planned with my mum who brought me a gorgeous necklace from Links. For some reason taking photos of it was hard but you can kind of see it here:

We went to Harrods and the Paris cafe Laduree for a glass of champers and I had the most amazing chocolate eclair and my mum had a slice of chocolate orange cake. So yummy. I would highly recommend it. I really could get used to this lifestyle :)

I used the money I got from family and friends to buy a watch in Harrods and ended up with more Links jewellery :) None of the photos I took came out so here’s one from the internet. As usual with me there was some drama though as the watch didn’t work and we had to trek to another store to get a replacement.

After shopping, we went to Covent Garden for a mooch and then had an early dinner in a restaurant called Sophie’s there. We spent so long looking at their cocktail menu in confusion that the waiter took pity and made up two he thought we’d like and they were delicious and pretty alcoholic :)

And here we are already looking a little tipsy:

I had a huge rack of ribs and my mum had salmon, definitely worth checking the restaurant out if you’re in Covent Garden. We didn’t have dessert as there was birthday cake waiting for us at home.

I came home to more cards and a lovely bunch of flowers from a friend. I collapsed on the sofa in my PJ’s and ate a huge slice of cake. Bliss. And now I’m in my thirties *shudder* :)

Happy International Women’s Day

I shared one of my favourite quotes on Twitter this morning to mark International Women’s Day and I started thinking about my favourite inspirational quotes by women so I thought I’d share them on here. I have definitely been inspired by successful women especially authors in my life so this seems like a great time to pay homage to them.

Happy Valentine’s Day

Yes, I’m a little cynical about Valentine’s Day – let’s face it it’s a day made for spending money and love should be shared and celebrated every day. Plus I’m usually single when it comes around so I can’t even pretend to be annoyed with a bouquet of red roses :) But I saw this Disney film short a few weeks ago being shared around the internet and I kept it to post on here today. I don’t even think the biggest cynics would fail to have their heart warmed by it.

So Happy Valentine’s Day to all my followers!

Ps: If this failed to cheer you up, try these instead :)

So, tell me – are you a Valentine’s fan or cynic?

This time of year

I can see the shimmering fairy lights reflected in your eyes

All the mistakes from the past year gone in a gold glow

The fire crackles turning cold hearts warm

Anger, fear and regrets can wait until the snow melts

This is my favourite time of the year.

Christmas wishes whispered to the fairy on top of the tree

She promises possibilities if we just believe

The glittering glint of the ornaments puts a smile on our faces

If we just let heartbreak go then love can find us

This is my favourite time of the year.

The cold outside can’t touch us in here

Christmas songs serenade us, wrapping us in warmth

We were lost in our lives until now

The season reminds us that all our dreams that can come true

This is my favourite time of the year.

Eating treats and clinking glasses it’s clear that

The best present of all is under this tree

Nothing will hurt us today and don’t worry about tomorrow

If Christmas brings out the best in us

Then let’s carry it for the rest of the year.

Phobias or why I hate Bonfire Night

The fifth of November in the UK is day we commemorate Guy Fawkes whose plan to blow up the Houses of Parliament failed in 1605. Generally known as Bonfire Night, people not only build bonfires but let off fireworks traditionally to mark this event. This is probably my least favourite time of the year here. Why? I’m scared of fireworks.

I’ve had this phobia since I was little – my mum remembers having to take me out of my first firework display after I freaked out. There is no known reason for my fear – I never had anything bad happen to me that might relate to fireworks. In this life anyway :) I avoid firework displays and generally stay in a round this date in anticipation of them. It’s the noise that scares me. I can appreciate the prettiness of the fireworks but not the noise they make as they explode.

I hate having such an irrational fear but phobias are strange things – hard to talk yourself out of.

Do you have a phobia?

Scary Stories

When I was a teenager, I was obsessed with the Point Horror books. Anyone else remember them? They were a horror series of books by different authors and in my early teens seemed very frightening. They were the first really scary stories I had read – before that, Roald Dahl was probably my first dip into anything out of the ordinary. I certainly wasn’t into scary stories like some kids are, maybe I was a wimp – I was freaked out by Michael Jackson’s Thriller video after all :)

In my later teens, the film franchise Scream started. I mostly avoided horror films. It wasn’t always because I was scared, often I felt like laughing at the clichés included – why would you go into that dark basement alone, after all? Scream was funny as well as scary and I really enjoyed it. I watched I Know What You Did Last Summer but I didn’t get into the genre in a big way.

At college, I did media studies and yes we had to watch films as part of the course. We did a section on horror and I finally watched some of the horror classics like Halloween and Carrie and Psycho. But they still didn’t draw me into horror in any real way – I can appreciate a scary film done well but I don’t feel the need to watch many. I don’t own any horror films and after my childhood obsession with the Point Horror books, I haven’t picked up any more books in the genre.

I love the supernatural though, which is why I’m okay with Halloween. And the genre can often be more scary than hook-handed serial killers. I love vampires, werewolves and witches and my book shelf is crammed with stories of them. My obsession really kicked off after reading Twilight (haters to the left :0) The first novels I wrote were supernatural and I’ll always have a soft spot for them.

Some of my favourite supernatural things are: the Sookie Stackhouse books, Vampire Academy, Twilight, The House of Night, The Body Finder, Shiver (Wolves of Mercy Falls), Harry Potter , The Mortal Instruments, Vampire Diaries, Supernatural, Fringe and Underworld. And the fact that most are aimed at teens means I don’t get too scared by them!

I think I’ll always enjoy being drawn into a fantasy world where the rules are different and there are dark creatures who may or may not be dangerous. The fun is in finding out, especially if they look like Damon from TVD :)

Do you like scary stories?

Happy World Book Day

It’s World Book Today so I thought I’d share this quote with you to celebrate. It’s been spread around Facebook for a while and it makes me smile everytime I read it!

Last year, we talked about our favourite books but this year, I thought it would be fun to share what we’re all currently reading. I’m currently reading The Help by Kathryn Stockett - I’ve heard so many good things about this book and the film that I knew I had to pick it up. It’s set in 1960′s Mississippi and tell the story of three women – two black maids and a white woman who come together in an extraordinary way and attempt to break down racial barriers. I’m about halfway through and I love the three main characters and how their stories unfold on the page. I’m looking forward to seeing how it all turns out and then I’ll watch the film.

What are you reading at the moment?

***********************************************************************************************************************************************

This year for Valentines day we would like to share with our readers on what makes it special for us.

As they say; women tend lead with their hearts, we definitely are suckers for something heartfelt over something cliche and over the top. Lots of monetary value is nice, but if there is not much sentiment put into it, it just feels impersonal.
Another thing we are into is something more on the “cute” side as opposed to shopping for lingerie, pulling out whips and making the whole night revolve around having sex. We believe in a relationship with regular passionate sex and if we have to wait until one  specific day a year to do that, clearly that would make us very dissatisfied in a relationship.

Some sweet gestures are of course flowers, often roses are what’s expected but maybe something different would always be nice. Something to make it stand out from all the other times. Planning a day of events or things you like to do together is also really sweet or staying somewhere nice. As long as the day is about you two and not just a rose and dinner at a restaurant, again then off home. That is quite cliche and more like Friday night date with the boyfriend.

Regardless of what the plans of the day/evening are, keeping it personal is always key.

Mckenzie: The cutest thing I remember someone did for me was cook a whole meal and set the table with candles, themed tablecloth and even got me my favourite wine. It was a perfect setting, just not with the perfect person. Unfortunately, after all that, I failed to feel happiness in the relationship. But regardless, I will always remember the gesture and always hoped that one day I could have all that again, just with the right person in order to actually feel swept off my feet.
While for some couples this is a good time to celebrate their time together, it can also be a wake up call or a point to evaluate the relationship. If you feel dissatisfied or feel like something is missing, it is important to not give up. I once went on a lunch  date on valentines day just because I would never give up trying to find the person that I want to be with and that would want to be with me.

This year I am spending Valentines day with the boyfriend. He has made us reservations at a very fancy hotel in the city and we will be checking in early and spending the whole afternoon/evening in the area. I think at some point we are grabbing food, going skating and then swimming in the pool. I definitely look forward to it and believe that this year I will be happy to be spending it with him and not feel the emptiness I did the year before.

Valentines day to me always means hope, hoping for what is out there or hoping that you will always have happiness. You cannot predict tomorrow or whether you will always be happy with that person. But if you see yourself celebrating many more valentines with them, then that is great. If not, it is important to not wait any longer and move on to finding the right one for you. While you settle deeper into a relationship with the wrong person, the right person could be passing you by and you might miss that chance.

Happy Valentines Day!

Brooke and Mckenzie
