The trials of shopping

I’ve never been a fan of one particular shop. There isn’t one place I head to first when I’m shopping, somewhere I know I’ll find something. I find shopping on the high street to about luck really – sometimes I find something in one shop, the next time will think everything in there is hideous. Even if it looks good on the hanger there’s no guarantee it will fit or look good actually on you.

I don’t think it’s just a high street thing either. Once I was annoyed that I couldn’t find any decent jeans I tried on loads fo designer ones in a department store just to see if I paid that bit more whether I get a better fit. Nope. None of them looked good. Some seemed stupidly tight even though the waist measurement was apparently the right inches. I’ve managed to find jeans on the high street that I now stick to – skinny jeans from Topshop and bootcut ones from Gap. I had to buy the Topshop ones on-line because they never have many sizes in store. Annoying!

Recently I brought a few things from Next. I’ve never gone crazy over their clothes and often walked in and walked out again but the shopping gods were with me and I ended up with this little lot (sorry about the pics, I got them off their website and the sizes were odd):

One shop that has never worked for me is H & M. I often see nice things on people, which they got there but everytime I visit, I just see a bewildering mess of clothes and nothing fits me properly. So annoying but I’ve given up trying now. I also avoid Primark as it’s like a crowded jumble sale most of the time.

I’m also not a massive online fan. I brought a few things from online store ASOS.com but had to return most of them. They just didn’t look how I thought they would from the picture. I just don’t think you can get the same feel for how clothes will look on you from the internet and then you have all the hassle of posting the stuff back. I don’t think I’ll bother again.

No wonder when I go shopping I’m there for hours :) Desperately searching for something that looks nice. I wish I did have a place that filled all my needs but I don’t think it will happen anytime soon.

Do you have a favourite shop?

Material girl

I feel in the need of treating myself to something special. This summer, I have no holidays plans so with that saving in mind along with the dullness of staying put (and probably enduring more rain), I think I need to buy myself a staying at home present. Yes I am trying to be logical about buying things for myself – it’s a gift!

I have a few ideas of what I should buy but thought I’d test opinion out on here to make sure my treat is the right treat. So over to you guys to vote for what my purchase should be :)

  • A new handbag -  I’m liking this Juicy Couture one …

  • A new piece of jewellry - my top choice would be an evening watch with some sparkles on it (I only have a black leather one) or some diamond stud earrings.
  • A pair of designer sunlgasses (I currently wear a £15 pair from River Island)

What do you think?

Long weekend

I had a three day weekend thanks to the May bank holiday and it was a busy one.

On Saturday I went with my family to Mercedes-Benz World at Brooklands. The showroom has a mix of classic and new cars and there’s a track and skid pad outside for driving experiences. Despite it being so close to where I live I hadn’t been before so we wandered around and had some drinks (my can of coke cost me £1.80!!).

I wouldn’t say no to the above one! And it’s a snip at £50k :)

After that we went to Gourmet Burger Kitchen, their burgers are so yummy. I had a cheeseburger cooked just how I like it, chips and a glass of rose.

I can’t eat burger and chips without lots of mayo – naughty but nice :)

On Sunday, I went for lunch with some friends I’ve known since our school days and we had a good catch up! I was full after my roast dinner and chocolate pudding!

Yesterday, I went shopping with my mum but I couldn’t find any clothes, all the shops have is beach stuff and as I’m not going to the beach that’s no good for me :( I did get a couple of bits for my room though …

The only downside is I’m exhausted! I can never sleep in late now, I long for my Uni days when I didn’t get up until 10am, now I’m awake when my alarm goes off in the week for work and rarely sleep past 7am, which sucks if I have a late night. Luckily, I took today off work and I’m going to chill out at home!

I hope you all had a great weekend!

Souvenirs and Songs

Went on a trip out today with my mum first to Savill Gardens for lunch then onto the garden centre to buys things for our work in progress Mediterranean garden (see tomorrow for photos). Savill Garden has a great restaurant and shop, which embarrassingly were the only two parts we savoured and not the gardens themselves (as the day was blustery and they’re pretty pricey to pay out just to pop into). Check out their website if you fancy a day out in Surrey.

I didn’t take my camera so excuse the phone pics. Here’s the outside:

Lunch wasn’t cheap but we didn’t mind as it was really tasty and kept us going all day …

I had steak pie, potatoes and veg and mum had the roast pork. Yum!

Wherever we go, we are experts at sniffing out things to buy. I popped into the gift shop and came out with two back and silver fabric bracelets:

From there very full we moved onto a garden centre where mum socked up on summer plants and I wandered around the home items. Then things got crazy as I stocked up on yet more bits for my brown and cream bedroom. Soon there won’t be any room for me :)

 A wind chime.

An angel ornament that means serenity.

A fun personalised money box for coins.

 A hanging butterfly.

 A lantern.

I really cannot be trusted to go out!

Here’s my music picks for this week. For some reason you tube wouldn’t embed so I gave up, Here’s the list anyway …

Alissa Moreno – Wildfires

Lucy Schwartz – Turn back around

Kyler England  – You and I

Jag Star – Shine

Have a lovely Sunday guys!

So many books, so little time

While I’ve been off work, I have bene to the shops several times (of course!) and seem to have accumulated a stack of books that need reading. I’m running out of space to house all my books but want to keep them for a future book shelf display when I actually have my own house and I just can’t stop buying books!

I love to read but even I’m a bit overwhelmed by this little lot …

  • The Crimson Petal and The White by Michel Faber – This was recently adapted by the BBC but I missed it so tought I’d try the book first. This was in Waterstones 3 for 2 so I went for it. It’s the biggest book I’ve ever seen though! It’s quite daunting to look at it :)
  • The Taker – Alma Katsu - an adult vampire book in the 3 for 2 offer and as I love vampires I couldn’t resist.
  • Angelogy by Danielle Trussoni was my final 3 for 2 purchase. I’ve heard a lot about this book and wanted to give it a try. Angels are the new vampires apparently lol.
  • Only the Good Spy Young – Ally Carter  – the fourth book in the Gallagher Girls series. The first three were bags of fun so this should be a light read.
  • The Lost Saint – Bree De Spain – the sequel to the Dark Divine – a werewolf young adult book with religious references.
  • The Green Angel – Alice Hoffman. I’ve never read a Hoffman book but she sounds like my kind of thing. This book though is tiny and really thin (lucky it was only cheap from Amazon) so I’m intrigued to see what it’s like.

Plus I’m yet to read City of Fallen Angels and the new Sookie Stackhouse book is out next week. No I must read the above first, stay off Amazon. I said stay off Amazon!

Have you brought any new books over Easter? Have you read any from my purchases?

At least I had cake

Ysterday I went to check out a new place near where I live – an independent book shop and coffee shop rolled into one. I really want to find a place to hangout in so I was hopeful this could be it as it combined two of my favourite things – books and cakes :)

Sadly, I was underwhelmed by the experience. The book shop lacked stick and the young adult section consisted of Twilight and that’s it. I order a vanilla drink and muffin, which were tasty but the service was slow and unfriendly.

I honestly think I could open up a much better place. Who wants to join me?! :)

The one saving grace of my trip was that I spotted a gift shop nearby and found these …

Perfect for a shopaholic like me :)

Hehe – this is going up in my room. I think I’ll add to my quotes page as well.

Here’s my song picks this week …

The Kills – Satellite

Sick Puppies – Maybe

Panic at the disco - Ballad of Mona Lisa

Emily Osment – Lovesick

Enjoy the rest of the weekend!

Sunshine, Shopping and Songs

Yesterday was a gorgeous day in Surrey – the sun was shinning and the sky was completely blue and it was amazingly warm for April. After I had my nails done (I get acrylic tips) I walked into the next town to make the most of the lovely day and to hit the shops. I really needed some summery shoes for work but not sandals because it’s too early and I find them hard to walk around London in.

I hit the jackpot, look what I came back with ….

Woo lots of shoes! I got two pairs on a buy one get one half price deal was well.

I chested and didn’t stick to just buying shoes. I also found a demin jacket and bag. Jackets are usually a nightmare but this actually fitted me. I got so excited, I took some pics of me wearing it as well.

I downloaded 2 really cool apps on the recommendation of Elin over at http://andserenitytoo.wordpress.com/ called ShakeIt Photo and Camera+. they both alter your pictures – ShakeIt turns them into vintage looking pics and Camera+ lets you crop and colour them. Check these out:

To get you all in the same sunny mood as we are over here, these are my song picks today:

James Vincent McMorrow – If I had a Boat

David Bowie – Changes

Alice Gold – Runaway Love

Have a lovely Sunday everyone!

Rain, suitcases and a chocolate eclair

It’s a dull rainy day today sigh. I dragged myself out because I needed to get a suitcase from the market for my March trip to Paris so I pulled on my parka, lifted up the hood and headed out to town.

Unfortunately, I can never get just one thing. This is what I’ve come back with:

£18 suitcase from market.

Black jersey dress for work from River Island £30.

Black across body bag from River Island. £25.

Sunglasses from River Island £15. An attempt to will the sun to come out!

I also brought beef bourgion and mash potato from M & S and succumbed to a chocolate eclair for desert. So naughty but it’s going to be nice!

Tonight’s plans are to watch Inception. I haven’t seen it yet but I’ve heard it’s good. Wow I’m so wild :-)

Hope you’re all having a good weekend so far, enjoy your evenings!

I heart shopping

After the last couple of philosophical blogs, I wanted to write something a bit more light hearted!

I love shopping. If I can find a shop somewhere then I will. I don’t spend a fortune, the high street is where I head to but I love to browse and I love to buy!

Yesterday was shopping day. This is what I got:

  • Shoes from Office – tan loafers and black lace up ankle boots
  • Cardigan from Gap – navy and brown with some cool fringe and buckle details
  • A poka dot scarf from Accessorize
  • A knitted skirt with heart pattern from ASOS.com

I also picked this up from HMV:

I have totally fallen in love with ‘Rolling in the Deep’ – she has an amazing voice and this album is a great showcase for her talent.

My shopping style

I think I’ve always loved to buy clothes and shop and while some people can’t stand trapsing around for hours, I love it and have amazing will power to stick it out until I find want I’m looking for. Often I go out for a particular thing but end up with something completely different but yesterday I found 2 pairs of shoes that I really needed. I’m a handbag girl and often forget about shoes so they were a must buy.

I read fashion mags and keep an eye on trends but adapt to suit me. I work in London in a casual office so can pretty much wear what I like and have to be comfortable travelling on the tube. I’m not really dress, more of a jeans and leggings girl but I’m girly with it – I love a cute pattern or quirky style. I also like wearing scarves and ballet pumps.

What’s your shopping style?
