A rose by any other name would smell as sweet

Β

A minor celeb over here – a TV presenter, ex-band member and store advertiser – Myleene Klass has just given birth to a girl. Who she’s called Hero. Seriously?! I really despair about the outlandish names celebs call their children – don’t these kids get bullied? A girl called Hero at my school would have definitely suffered πŸ™‚

Sometimes I think about names for my children. Trying to write characters makes this hard – I end up calling characters names I like, names I thought about for my own kids if I ever have them. If my book’s never get published it’s all good but if they do, I can’t very well name my kids after characters in my own novels, can I?! People would take the mick for sure. I will avoid crazy names though for their peace of mind.

So how do you choose names for your children? It is names you like, names that mean something to do e.g. family names or name them after an idol of yours? Do you pick a long name and then a nickname for them? I personally dislike the fact my name is Victoria because it’s soo long everyone wants to shorten it. Even if I introduce myself by my full name, people straight away shorten it. Only my family stick to it. You def need to be aware of what people will do with the name.

Here’s some other shocking celeb children’s names….

Princess Tiaamii: Jordan and Peter Andre

Apple: Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow

Memphis Eve: Bono

Bluebell Madonna: Geri Halliwell

Kyd: David Duchovny and Tea Leoni

Sage Moonblood: Sylvester Stallone and Sasha Czack

Kal-El Coppola: Nicholas Cage

Hopper: Sean Penn and Robin Wright

I’m thankful for my name now πŸ™‚

What’s the craziest name you’ve heard? Do you know what you want to call your children?

  1. Some people (in particular celebs), need to give more thought to the names they give their kids, some of them must be so embarrassing for the child to live with.
I have 3 kids and they all have ordinary names; we took into account what the names could be shortened to and were happy with the results – and I think our kids are happy with their names.

  2. Cute post. I think “Moses” is a bit of a bizarre name…but who knows…
Its funny really because I think after the whole Twilight breakout, names like “Bella” really became popular.
I’ve always liked simple ones like “Emma” or “Emily” …or for a boy, “Jack” …something like that…but I know I won’t have kids πŸ™‚
I think it would be hard to choose a name for a kid though…my mind changes all the time, and I’d probably be sick of my own kid’s name πŸ™‚

  3. That’s a dilemma – guess you can’t pick names for your characters then that are too nice! πŸ˜‰
I love wondering about names! During family dinners I used to read a book my uncle had that contained ancient icelandic names, really funny! Wouldn’t want to be named any of them though! Kal-El is one lucky kid by the way πŸ˜‰
I’ve thought a lot about what to name my kids (since I was maybe twelve years old and nowhere near thinking about having them), and I always change my mind… I only know that I will put a lot of thought into it (oh and I guess I will have to compromise too since Elli will deliver half of the chromosomes, hehe)

  4. I named my boys after going through the possibilites of what they could be called.. So James Michael and Benjamin Peter it was.. I can cope with the shortened versions ( except I would go nuts if people called James Jamie.. they are now Jay and Ben ). My name people try and shorten to Isle.. shudder ( how they get that from Eileen I’ve no idea ).
Is Hero’s surname going to be Klass? That’s just evil πŸ˜€

  5. People just don’t think…although I have to admit that for some reason Apple sounds kind of cool to me. I used to work at a summer camp and there was a family with five children…we called them the “Q” kids. They all had names starting with Q. Another family all had two names…all titles ie. one kid was King Emperor another Queen Princess. ODD!

  6. Rubbish fact.. when I was in Barbados I went on a catamaran called the princess tiamii…. before Jordan had another baby. I wonder if she had a good time on that cruise too?! Myleen Klass is reaaaallly annoying Vic, I have to turn the telly over whenever she is on it! πŸ™‚

    1. Haha that would be hilarious – embarassing though I know the name came from Katie and Peter’s mums names put together! I agree, she’s on things way too much, just cos she wore a bikini πŸ™‚

  7. there are many crazy names people name their kids..i am also thank full for mine!!! and i guess ill start thinking about naming my kids after marriage lol… help is needed for naming…!

  8. Celebrities always have the weirdest baby names! It makes me sad for the kids! I personally have always loved the name Jillian and want to name my daughter that if I ever have one πŸ™‚

  9. I am actually diggin Bono’s childs name, I think it was a nice ring to it. I despise anyone who names their kid something edible or with a royalty title. Really?

Um, no kids here and I really don’t want them but if I did the boys name would be Dean. That is my favorite men’s name out there. And if I had a girl, no clue, I would need a martini and valium every day after her birth!

    1. Yeah no fruit names please! Dean is good, no nicknames needed as short enough on it’s own! Haha I would totally live out pink fantasies if I have one lol.

  10. Wait, you missed Pilot Inspektor (Jason Lee’s son), no seriously why would you do that? And yes, he spelled it funny on purpose. That’s just so mean. I think that’s the weird one I can’t forget/forgive, yes I’m mad at him for being so dumb.

I always fancied having twins and calling them Madeline and Madison (although that may be a little to matchy matchy). I also like the names Aya (it’s Japanese) or Ava. I think in terms of girls, I have no idea what I would name a little boy, Boi (haha now that’s dumb).

    1. Oh no poor kid, that is bad and makes no sense either, sounds like they just wanted to get in the press with it! I’ve always wanted girl twins maybe Rose or Lily, cute but I probably couldn’t cope with two at once πŸ™‚ I think boys names are tricker for sure.
