11.11.11

Today marks Armistice or Remembrance Day when we mark the end of WW1 and remember everyone who has fought for their country in both the World Wars and more recent conflicts. This year is extra poignant as it’s not only the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month but it is also 2011.

I think it’s really important to use this day to think about everyone who has bravely protected us through the years especially those who lost their lives in the process. We may not also agree with the reasons for fighting but we must always appreciate the people who serve their country when they are asked to. I fortunately don’t know anyone personally but my heart goes out to everyone who has lost someone to war.

The poppy has become the symbol of this day and yesterday I ordered a sparkly poppy brooch from the British Legion’s online poppy shop. Please have a look at the site as you can donate to a special cause and get a lovely poppy themed item in return.

As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them. ~John Fitzgerald Kennedy

Valor is stability, not of legs and arms, but of courage and the soul. ~Michel de Montaigne

We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude. ~ Cynthia Ozick

Lord, bid war’s trumpet cease;
Fold the whole earth in peace.
